Made of hinoki wood and washi from Saga, the Nao Cabinet is made in collaboration with Nao Washi, a washi mill that has been operating for over 300 years in the mountains of Nao. Washi is a durable material that can last for centuries and has been used in Japanese daily life since ancient times. Keiji Ashizawa wanted to express a new form of traditional Japanese shoji screen through the design of this cabinet. Delicate details, such as the recessed handle and edge hinges, elevate its minimalist design. When one opens its doors, the natural fragrance of hinoki wood can be enjoyed.

Keiji Ashizawa Design is an architecture and product design studio based in Tokyo, Japan. Formed in 2005 by Keiji Ashizawa, the studio is comprised of both architects and designers, all bringing unique skills to the team. Through logical thinking and open-mindedness, the studio presents works of ‘honest’ design — simple, thoughtful and refined — derived naturally through the process of maximizing the potential of each material. The work of the studio is based on the notion that the sharing of experiences is essential to the creative process, exercised through collaboration on many levels: internally amongst the designers, and in maintaining relationships with clients and other creative professionals to grow, learn and form an evolving dialogue of thought. After graduating from Yokohama National University in 1996, Keiji spent the first ten years of his career working as both an architect and steel fabricator. The unique skills and experience gained throughout these early years, including a valued understanding of materials, continue to influence his approach to design.
Ariake
Founded by the Legnatec and Hirata Chair workshops in the furniture-making town of Morodomi, Saga, Ariake takes its name from the nearby Ariake Sea - and from the Japanese word for daybreak. The brand pairs Japanese craftsmanship with leading international designers including Gabriel Tan, Keiji Ashizawa, Norm Architects and Anderssen & Voll.
The result is a collection that balances handwork with precise machining, made from oak, ash, hinoki and cedar with signature finishes like sumi and indigo - from dining chairs and benches to desks, shelving and cabinetry. Explore the Ariake collection at APATO, Australia's home of authentic Japanese designer furniture, and enquire for finishes, lead times and trade pricing.
