The K-Series, also known as Oba-Q, epitomizes Japanese post-modernism, designed in 1972 by the legendary interior designer Shiro Kuramata. The name Oba-Q is inspired by its resemblance to a beloved ghost icon from Japanese cartoons. The shade, resembling a draped white cloth, casts a captivating soft glow.
Crafted by four skilled Japanese artisans, it is made by heating a single piece of acrylic sheet and draping it over a pole, allowing it to hang naturally as it hardens. The opalescent acrylate resin creates a beautifully smooth, skewed surface that generates a gradient glow, radiating playfulness through the illusion of floating. Its nebulous design, combined with its unforgettable charm, truly captivates the heart.

About Shiro Kuramata
Shiro Kuramata (1934-1991) was a prolific Japanese interior designer who had seen potential in the latest science and technology since the ’60s and created a number of innovative modern products. After studying interior design at Kuwasawa Design School, he founded the Kuramata Design Office in Tokyo in 1965. He frequently employed industrial materials such as acrylic, glass, aluminium, and steel mesh while combining them into traditional Japanese aesthetics for his works. Many of his works were created under the theme of “be free of gravity”, which are transparent and floating-like objects adapting to daily life. K-Series is one of the works that thoroughly reflects his philosophy.
