Rooted in “magewappa,” a traditional woodcraft from Odate, Akita Prefecture, Japan, this piece highlights the natural character of Akita cedar and its distinctive grain. Magewappa is officially designated as a traditional craft of Japan. It takes shape through techniques passed down over generations, where material and craftsmanship are closely intertwined.
The warmth of the cedar, shaped through this heritage, gives the piece a gentle and enduring presence in space. As a lighting object, it is designed not only for moments when it is illuminated, but also for the time it exists unlit. Rather than asserting itself, it quietly integrates into its surroundings, creating a soft atmosphere through the contrast of light and shadow.
The cedar deepens in tone and character over time, allowing the piece to age gracefully with use.
