The KUMIKO Cabinet by Staffan Holm draws on the traditional Japanese craft of kumiko - delicate latticed screens used as both ornament and gentle partition. Holm pairs those semi-transparent screens with finely made cabinetry, so the piece reads as both storage and sculpture; add interior lighting and the whole cabinet glows softly, becoming a lamp of sorts.
Handcrafted by Ariake in Morodomi, Saga, it combines sumi ash with natural hinoki and comes in standard, tall and low sizes.

Ariake
Founded by the Legnatec and Hirata Chair workshops in the furniture-making town of Morodomi, Saga, Ariake takes its name from the nearby Ariake Sea - and from the Japanese word for daybreak. The brand pairs Japanese craftsmanship with leading international designers including Gabriel Tan, Keiji Ashizawa, Norm Architects and Anderssen & Voll.
The result is a collection that balances handwork with precise machining, made from oak, ash, hinoki and cedar with signature finishes like sumi and indigo - from dining chairs and benches to desks, shelving and cabinetry.
